The End review – devastating TV that shows what makes life worth living ★★★★

What’s the point of it all? Harriet Walter and Frances O’Connor play a mother and daughter grappling with life’s eternal questions in this funny and painfully perceptive drama

We open with Harriet Walter lying in bed with a bag over her head and a near-empty bottle of booze by her side. A log falls out of the fire downstairs and sets light to the place. Burning is clearly not how she wants to go, so she swings herself out of bed, tears the bag off, takes a final swig of vodka and throws herself out of the window. She groans as she hits the ground, but only in disappointment when the impact fails to kill her. She is taken to hospital in an ambulance. “It says: ‘Do not resuscitate!’” she cries fiercely, jabbing at the bracelet on her wrist. “Love,” says the kindly paramedic sitting with her, “you’re still conscious.”

So The End (Sky Atlantic) begins. Walter plays – with such humanity, humour and grace that I hope this early posting in the year is not forgotten when awards are handed out – Edie, widowed six months previously. This seems to be the proximate cause of her suicide attempt(s) but, as we come to see over the course of the subtle, funny and quietly devastating opening episode, rarely is a life-or-death decision arrived at so simply.

Her daughter Kate (Frances O’Connor) brings her over to Australia so she can be more closely supervised. Edie expected to be living with Kate herself (“You’ve got three and a half bathrooms!”), but is instead installed in a nearby luxury retirement village, lest she supervene her mother’s efforts by murdering her.

Liam Neeson will start shooting a Hollywood action movie in Melbourne next Tuesday as Australia's post-COVID film production boom continues to gather momentum.

The 68-year-old Northern Irish actor has been in hotel quarantine in Sydney since arriving last Saturday, and is due to fly to Melbourne this weekend to commence work on the $43 million film Blacklight which is written, directed and produced by Ozark co-creator Mark Williams.

According to a brief description issued by the production, Blacklight is a thriller "about a troubled off-the-books fixer for the FBI tasked with pulling undercover agents out of dangerous situations" who finds himself embroiled in a conspiracy that goes right to the top.

In other words, it's a Liam Neeson action movie.

2ND UPDATE: Dora and the Lost City of Gold is moving again, but not by that much. Paramount is moving the release date for its live-action feature adaptation of the hit Nickelodeon show from July 31 to August 9.

The news comes in the wake of Disney pushing Artemis Fowl off August 9 and sending it to May 29 next summer. No surprise if more release date changes come from other rivals in the wake of Disney’s revamped theatrical release slate this morning.

Dora will know share the marquee with CBS Films’ Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, Warner Bros’ crime noir The Kitchen and Bleecker Street’s Brian Banks.

‘Jane The Novela’: Remy Hii To Star In the CW Spinoff; ‘Jane the Virgin’s Ivonne Coll, Benito Martinez, Holland Roden Also Cast

EXCLUSIVE: Remy Hii (Marco Polo) is set as the male co-lead alongside Hunter Parrish in Jane the Novela, the CW’s Jane the Virgin spinoff pilot headlined by Jacqueline Grace Lopez and narrated and executive produced by Jane the Virgin star Gina Rodriguez. Also, providing continuity from the original series in front of the camera, Jane The Virgin co-star Ivonne Coll has been set as a series regular in the telenovela anthology offshoot, along with Benito Martinez (The Shield) and Holland Roden (Teen Wolf).

Written/exec produced by Jane writer Valentina Garza, directed/exec produced by Jane EP Brad Silberling and exec produced by Jane creator/EP Jennie Snyder Urman, Jane the Novelais a soapy, telenovela-inspired anthology series in the tradition of Jane the Virgin, where each season is based on a different fictional novel “written by” Jane Villanueva and narrated by the author herself.

The first installment takes place at the intersection of Napa Valley wine country and the San Francisco art scene and pairs family secrets and sins of the past with twists, tropes and a bloody bottle of red. It centers on Estela (Lopez), an up-and-coming art curator who has spent years playing it safe and coloring within the lines. But a shocking secret changes everything and forces her to live a double life.

Being “in the tradition” of Jane the Virgin, Jane the Novela mirrors the setup of the original series. It too follows a driven, imaginative twentysomething Latina woman (Lopez) who is torn between her boyfriend, Luen (Hii), and Felix (Parrish), a handsome, rich guy. In this case, Luen is head of security while Felix is in the wine business vs. Jane Villanueva’s cop boyfriend Michael and love interest Rafael, a hotel heir.
